History of Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania was one of the original thirteen colonies in America.  It was founded by William Penn in 1682 and was named in honor of his father.  Penn was part of a group called the Quakers.  The Quakers were unwelcome in England because they believed in treating everybody equal.  They didn't believe in bowing to the king, fighting and paying taxes.  Therefore, Penn wanted his own colony where all the Quakers could be safe.  The king granted Penn a huge piece of land because he owed Penn's father a big debt. Penn advertised his colony all over Europe and promised them of all faiths would be treated equally.  As a result, his promise attracted many settlers from several countries.  Pennsylvania stretched between the Puritan Colonies of New England and the Anglicia Colonies of the South.  Penn named his capital city Philadelphia ("Greek for the city of brotherly love") .  It was there he wrote great documents of government that made Pennsylvania the first democracy in America!

An early colonist in Pennsylvania stared at the glory and peace of the colony and said, "Poor Men and Women here can get three times the pay for labor then they can in England, here no beggars can be seen.  Jealousy here is very rarely seen, nor are old maids to be met with; for all commonly marry before they are twenty years of age."  In 1718 William Penn died in England, but left his three remaining sons to govern Pennsylvania.

Slogan: In 1682 Pennsylvania was founded.  For greatness it was bounded!  Come to Pennsylvania where the religion is free, the soil is rich and everyone is fed!

This is a picture of the state seal of Pennsylvania.  I am not exactly sure if it is the current one or the one for the colony or both.

This is a picture of Pennsylvania when it was a colony.  It has many of the important cities and towns on there, for example Philadelphia.   It was the colony's capital.
